Welcome to my website!
I'm Alberto Pretto, a post-doc research fellow at the Intelligent Autonomous Systems Laboratory (IAS-Lab) of the University of Padua. My research topics are Artificial Intelligence, robotic vision and autonomous mobile robots navigation (Localization and SLAM). In research section there's a brief overview about my activities, a list of my papers is available in pubblications section.

I'm also a charter member and software consultant of IT+Robotics Srl, a spin-off company of the University of Padova working in the field of Artificial vision, autonomous robotics and video surveillance systems, where I work as technical consultant and software analyst.

Again at UCLA

Topic: newsBetween December 2010 and March 2011, I will be again in in Los Angeles (USA) as visiting researcher at the prof. Soatto's UCLA VisionLab.

We won the best paper award at IEEE International Workshop Towards Smart Communications and Network technologies applied on Autonomous Systems (SaCoNAS @ GLOBECOM 2010) with the paper:

  • E. Menegatti, M. Danieletto, M. Mina, A. Pretto, S. Zanconato, P. Zanuttigh, A. Zanella Autonomous discovery, localization and recognition of smart objects through WSN and image features

  • Visiting scholar at UCLA in Los Angeles, USA

Topic: newsSince February 25 2010, I will be in Los Angeles (USA) at the UCLA VisionLab leaded by prof. Stefano Soatto.

The research that I will carry out deals with topics as the Visual SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) and the real-time 3D dense reconstruction from images. I plan to continue my current research projects, that deal with the dense scene reconstruction in a urban environment with an omnidirectional camera and in an indoor environment with a perspective camera mounted on a humanoid robot and, at the same time, to contribute to the projects of the laboratory that deal with structure from motion, object recognition and texture segmentation topics.

    Ph.D. in Information Engineering

Topic: newsOn October 20 2009, I received a Ph.D. in Information Engineering at the University of Padua with thesis Visual-SLAM for Humanoid Robots . My PhD advisor was Prof. Enrico Pagello and my co-advisors was Prof. Emanuele Menegatti.

    Post-doc research fellowship

Topic: newsFrom 1st January 2009, I'm a post-doc research fellow at the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Padua.
In my research, I will focus on 3D Visual SLAM (Simultaneous localization and mapping) using as experimental platforms small humanoids robots.

Guest PhD student in Freiburg, Germany

Topic: newsCurrently I'm guest PhD student at prof. Wolfram Burgard
AIS Laboratory in Freiburg, a very nice city in the south west of Germany.

I'm working on a visual odometry strategy well-suited for small humanoids robot. As experimental plaform I'm s using the Nimbro team humanoids robots, that won all finals of the Humanoid League at RoboCup 2007.
    I stay here until May.
